CONSTITUENT SERVICE:
As a member of the House of Representatives, I will have to consider, according to a recent article in the Boston Globe, some 3,000 bills now pending in the Legislature. This is the essential function of a legislator, and I’m running for this seat because I think that I can make a difference by bringing my long experience to the consideration of these measures, some of which will have a direct impact on you, the voter.
But there is another aspect to being member of the House, and that is listening to the concerns of my constituents, helping them to penetrate the maze of the state bureaucracy, and speaking up for them when that bureaucracy is unresponsive. As a lawyer in private practice, I’ve had a lot of experience attempting to deal with that bureaucracy on behalf of my clients.
I intend to have times and places in both West Medford and Arlington when I will be available for anyone who needs to see me to look in and discuss their problems. For example, I will try to help the people along Summer Street in Arlington deal with the horrendous and seemingly endless process of reconstructing that street, which has involved unnecessarily cutting down trees, bombarding people with audio signals at crossings loud enough to be heard as much as 400 feet away, and rupturing people’s basements. Other street construction projects, to my recollection, have not involved such burdens on the abutters.
